"First Steps" a show by Irina Maria Iliescu

First Steps

Irina Maria Iliescu is a young graduate of the Art Institute in Bucharest. Her work shown this month, as a resident artist @ ArtXpert Gallery  is unique in the Romanian art scene at the moment. Few local artist dare to be pop artists, this aestetics being considered too soft in this part of the world. Irina Maria Iliescu (22) is a complete product of the “free world”- she’s born after the fall of communism. Her 10 paintings (oil on canvas), colorful and well executed talk about the way we teach kids to become consumers from a very young age. At a first read, the images are inoffensive – just some vending machines filled with candy. Deep inside there is a different approach. Most of these inoffensive machines  that we find in little shops, parks and markets, are in fact  consumer impuls  generators. Irina Maria Iliescu’ s work point exactly to the perverted mind of the adults that are making money out of children meanwhile creating a buying habit for them.

As previously mentioned, her work is unique in this part of the world but has deep roots in the history of pop art: Wayne Thiebaud who in early 50’s painted a series of cheep ordinary objects concentrating on slices of pie, soda fountains and ice cream cones, also passing on the craft to the much younger Mel Ramos.
Wayne Thiebaud

Irina Maria Iliescu’s show that runs from 27th of September to 15th on October at ArtXpert Gallery in Bucharest is a strong connection in time over the pure pop art of the early 50’s and 60’s.

Before Being American, Pop Art Was a Romanian Business

Back in the day, when I started to paint in a pop art manner, I had to face some reaction from few fellow American artist. The concern was based upon two issues_ one being that, as a Romanian born and naturalized too late in the US, I might have no reasons, and no background, to work in this manner and, second, that out of my cultural background and national heritage there are no recognizable personalities, facts or products.

Even today I have to fight, from time to time, this two issues.

Here is my take:

"As we all know, pop art was initially considered a revision of Dadaism or neo-dada. In that take I have to remind  to all, that Dadaism is a movement that was jump-started by Romanian writer Tristan Tzara and the Romania painter Marcel Janco. “Dada was born out of negative reaction to the horrors of World War I. This international movement was begun by a group of artists and poets associated with the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. Dada rejected reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition. The origin of the name Dada is unclear; some believe that it is a nonsensical word. Others maintain that it originates from the Romanian artists Tristan Tzara and Marcel Janco's frequent use of the words da, da, meaning yes, yes in the Romanian language. Another theory says that the name "Dada" came during a meeting of the group when a paper knife stuck into a French-German dictionary happened to point to 'dada', a French word for 'hobbyhorse'” (source Wikipedia).

On another hand, even the dealers that put pop-art on the map, ware linked to Romania:

Leo Castelli, in 1932,  went to work for an insurance company in Bucharest, where he married Ileana Schapira one year later. Ileana Schapira later changed her name and became Ileana Sonnabend nicknamed as Machiavelli, owner on Sonnabend Gallery in SoHo where along her first husband Leo Castelli influenced the art-world and put pop art on the scene.

On the regard of my Romanian iconic heritage I can only name few things, strong enough for an ex-communist country of 22 million: Constantin Brancusi, Nicolae Ceausescu (the last European dictator) and the famous “People’s House” ( the largest building in Europe).

My deep concern, as an artist, is not how other pop artists think about me, but the fact that young Romanian artists do not feel entitled to take the challenge on the pop art  aestetics. " - Eugene Al Pann

Vasile Grigore -1982 Litho Book, the First Romanian PopArt Limited Edition

RIP Vasile Grigore(d. 21st of Feb. 2012)
Vasile Grigore e is one of the genuine Romanian pop artists. His bright colors, composition and most important his attitude qualify him as one of the few.
Even the way he was taking care of business brings him closer to the American pop art of the 80’s. Beside his works on canvas, watercolors and studio sketches, Grigore’s limited edition litho book is a historical one. A 500 copy, 12 plates book (first 50 are hand signed) self published in 1982 was a risky business adventure in communist Romania. Vasile Grigore (1935) is the only postmodern Romanian artist that took the chance to self publish and distribute his prints. In the era, any printed material was subject to censorship and virtually banned to be published. This book (see slides) is printed on various type of paper (50 x 70 cm) and is a referal point in Romanian printmakeing history.

Pann.

Pann
